Canada should extend the Afghan Mission

The Canadian government voted to end all combat missions in Afghanistan, and pull out the troops by July 2011. Now there's a growing sense that Prime Minister Stephan Harper wants to extend the mission until 2014. However the mission extension would not be for combat rolls, but to train Afghan troops, and police.

The NDP, under the leadership of Jack Layton is demanding that the extension be put to a vote in the House of Commons, and that each MP be free to vote, and not tow the party line. Canada has always had a role around the world as peace keepers, helping countries train their police forces, help with infastructure building, and just offer a better way of life for people in war torn countries across the world.

In the past Canada was a leader in this regard, but ever since Canada has taken on a combat roll in Afghanistan, that leadership has vanished. I strongly feel that Canada should stay in Afghanistan, help train the army and police. Also help rebuild parts of the country that have been devastated by war for way too long.

When Nato does pull out in 2014 as planned, the people of Afghanistan will need a strong army and police forces to prevent the Taliban from returning to power and starting the whole cycle of violence all over again.

Canada has lost over 150 troops, and for Canada to just pull out without completing it's goal because a group of MP's voted several years ago to do so is not right, and it's not honoring the memories of those you gave their lives to protect our way of live in Canada, and to help give a better life to the people of Afghanistan.

I hope those reading this blog posting will let their MP's know that the mission is not over until the job is completed, and the people of Afghanistan can live in peace with each other.
