The decider and chief as he's known by Jon Stewart of the Daily Show has been making the rounds lately to promote his new book - Decision Points.
I for one have not read the entire book, but have read the reviews and have heard him speak on the talk shows the past week or so. One thing that I do have to say is that he's just as bad of a public speaker out of office as he was when he was the President.
Lots of people wonder what would have happen had Al Gore won in 2000. We would have most likely still been attacked on 9/11 as the plans were in place long before the outcome of the election was known. We would have not gone into Iraq as that was a war created by Bush because of an old style Texas revenge that required him to go after Saddam for trying to kill his father back in the early 90's while in Kuwait.
Would have Katria happen, of course it would have, and I'm sure that Gore would have handled the problem 1000 times better than Bush. Would have the budget surpluses left behind by Clinton been wiped out by Gore had he been President? Most likely not as he would not have been fighting a war in Iraq that has cost American lives, but close to a Trillion dollars.
I'm sure the Afghan war would have been done, and Bin Laden would have been captured or killed had Bush not been elected as the goal of Nato forces was to go and capture and kill Bin Laden, and then leave that country with a small force behind to try and restore order. Now we are faced with the war expanding into Pakistan, which would for sure involve India, and all this because George W. Bush took his eye off the ball to go after Saddam who was contained by American forces in his little part of the world. Without the war in Iraq, the United States might have been able to focus more on Iran and they would have had the might to back up any threats. But today the U.S. military is spread very thin and would have a hard time attacking Iran should it come to that.
The Financial meltdown in 2007 caused one of the biggest recessions since the great depression, and now in 2010 the United States is still feeling the effects of the meltdown of 2007. It was the policy of being hands-off that lead to the greed of bankers, and Wall street brokers that resulted in foreclosures, unemployment reaching 10%, and a national debt into the trillions. While some blame Obama for not waving his magic wand and getting the United States back on track after 2 years in office, it was the policies of George W. Bush that caused the United States to be where it is today.
How will history treat George W. Bush? Will he be remembered as a great President who did what he did to ensure that America was not attacked again, or will history remember him as a failed President who's actions resulted in the deaths of thousands of American troops for a war that was entered into under false evidence.
As for me, I think in 50 years he will be remembered as the worst President in American History who charged the world for the worse, for generations to come.
