Nik Nanos is a well known in the world of polling and he's pretty much dead on when he predicts outcomes of elections. Below is his lastest poll on the mood of Canadians on a variety of subjects.
The most striking finding of the fourth annual Nanos Research Mood of Canada poll for Policy Options is that, although still a majority opinion, there has been a sharp drop in the percentage of Canadians who believe the country is headed in the right direction. The "right direction" response was comparatively lower in Quebec, while confidence appeared highest in the Prairies.
When we asked Canadians how they would rate Canada's reputation in the world in the last year, the opinion that it had "not improved/somewhat not improved" increased from the previous year. Again, the lowest marks for the Canadian brand were in Quebec.
The management scores of Stephen Harper's Conservative government also took a hit indicating the present government's lowest approval rating since our inaugural Mood of Canada poll in 2007. Once again, low appreciation in Quebec dragged down the government's overall scores.
Finally, in our annual question on federal-provincial relations, the perception that relations had either "not improved" or "somewhat not improved" moved up in 2010, the highest such levels in the four years we've been conducting the Mood of Canada survey for Policy Options.
The detailed tables and methodology are posted on our website along with regional breakdowns. You can also register to receive automatic polling updates.
Methodology
Nanos conducted a random telephone survey of 1,017 Canadians, 18 years of age and older, between November 1st and November 5th, 2010. A survey of 1,017 Canadians is accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20. Margins may be larger for smaller samples. Percentages may not add up to 100 due to rounding.
